SUMMARY:Nye Communities Coalition - Pahrump NV - ASIST Class
DESCRIPTION:ASIST teaches participants to recognize when someone may have thoughts of suicide and work with them to create a plan that will support their immediate safety. Although ASIST is widely used by healthcare providers\, participants don’t need any formal training to attend the workshop—anyone 16 or older can learn and use the ASIST model. \nSince its development in 1983\, ASIST has received regular updates to reflect improvements in knowledge and practice\, and over 1\,000\,000 people have taken the workshop. Studies show that the ASIST method helps reduce suicidal feelings in those at risk and is a cost-effective way to help address the problem of suicide. \nLearning goals and objectives \nOver the course of their two-day workshop\, ASIST participants learn to: \n\nUnderstand the ways that personal and societal attitudes affect views on suicide and interventions\nProvide guidance and suicide first aid to a person at risk in ways that meet their individual safety needs\nIdentify the key elements of an effective suicide safety plan and the actions required to implement it\nAppreciate the value of improving and integrating suicide prevention resources in the community at large\nRecognize other important aspects of suicide prevention including life-promotion and self-care\n\nWorkshop features: \n\nPresentations and guidance from two LivingWorks registered trainers\nA scientifically proven intervention model\nPowerful audiovisual learning aids\nGroup discussions\nSkills practice and development\nA balance of challenge and safety\n\nASIST helps to build regional networks of trained caregivers who can support each and use common terminology to approach suicide and safety.

SUMMARY:Update on 988: What Mental Health Professionals Need to Know Now
DESCRIPTION:Update on 988: What Mental Health Professionals Need to Know Now\nOctober 6\, 2022 | 3:00 pm – 4:00 pm ET | Live Webinar \nAs of July 16\, 2022\, people experiencing a mental health\, substance use or suicide crisis can call or text 988 or chat with the Lifeline at 988lifeline.org and be connected to trained crisis counselors in the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline network. These crisis counselors are trained to help anyone experiencing a mental health crisis or emotional distress. This is a great step forward to help people more easily access help during a crisis — but the work is just beginning. Currently\, the system we need to have in place to respond to people in crisis who call 988 is only available in some communities — and often at insufficient levels to meet the demand. This presentation will provide an update on the transition to 988\, an overview of an ideal crisis response system and what actions still need to happen so we can ensure that all people in crisis can receive an appropriate response.  \nREGISTER HERE\nFormat\nLive interactive webinar \nLearning Objectives  \n\nDistinguish the differences between the old Lifeline and the new 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. \nAssess how 988 can be an effective resource for patients. \nEvaluate the level of mental health crisis response in a given community. \n\nOutline   \n\nA vision for a mental health response to mental health crises \nWhat is 988 – what happened on July 16? \nHow 988 will work (911 vs. 988) \nWhere are we today?  \nWhat else needs to happen to #ReimagineCrisis \nAttendee Q&A

SUMMARY:Fabulous Las Vegas Sign is Changing it’s lights for Suicide Prevention!
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas Sign is Changing it’s lights for Suicide prevention! \nPlease join us at the Nevada Lights Up Suicide Prevention\nSeptember 8th at 8:30am to the changing of the color of the light’s ceremony. \nPlease arrive at least 15 minutes early to the event. The address is:|\n5271-5753 S. Las Vegas Blvd.\nLas Vegas NV 89119 \nIn Recognition of September as Suicide Prevention Month\, the Nevada Office of Suicide and the Nevada Coalition for Suicide Prevention are asking Nevadans to turn the skyline purple and turquoise from Sunday\, September 4th through Saturday September 10th. \nMore than 800\,000 people worldwide die by suicide\, including nearly 46\,000 Americans. In Nevada there was 603 deaths from suicide in 2020 and on average one Nevadan dies from suicide every 14 hours. Suicide is the second leading cause of death for ages 10-34 in the Sliver State\, second leading cause of death for American ages 18-34\, and ninth leading cause of death for all Nevadans. \n“Creating hope through action” is the triennial theme for the World Suicide Prevention Day. This year marks the 19th annual World Suicide Prevention Day\, to be recognized on September 10th with events state and nationwide. This theme is a reminder that there is an alternative to suicide and aims to inspire confidence and a light in all of us. Changing the color of the lights to The Fabulous Welcome to Las Vegas sign is just a star to helping raise awareness\, reducing stigma\, and spreading the word that Suicide Prevention is Everyone’s Business. \nIf you or someone you know is struggling\, call/text/chat with a crisis counselor at 988 today. To learn more go to nvsuicideprevntion.org \n“National Suicide Prevention Awareness week and month is an opportunity to shine a bright light on an important public health concern that affects all Nevadans. Please Join us in Supporting our state in purple and turquoise to let those grieving a loss to suicide\, or those needing extra support\, know they are not alone. We aim to light up our state with involvement\, connection\, and hope” \n– Misty Vaughan Allen\, Nevada’s Suicide Prevention Coordinator \n“World Suicide Prevention Day is how we start bringing light to all the dark places\, starting with Nevadans helping to light up our skylines showing the world there is a light in all of us. If this show of light can help inspire just one person in Nevada\, then we have begun to help make a change to the entire world.” \n– Jennifer L. Hilton\, Nevada Coalition for Suicide Prevention Chair \n\nPrepared by:\nJennifer L. Hilton | NCSP Board Chair\nAugust 31\, 2022
